2012 Western Amateur Golf Tournament
The 2012 Western Amateur Golf Tournament, conducted by the Western Golf Association, takes place July 31 through August 4 at historic Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park. This will be the 110th playing of the Western Amateur, making it the second oldest amateur golf tournament in the country. The 2012 event will fittingly be played at the Donald Ross designed Exmoor Country Club, which is Chicago golf’s 5th oldest course, opening in 1896. Only Belmont Golf Club (now Downers Grove Golf Club), Chicago Golf Club, Riverside Golf Club and Onwentsia Country Club can trace their roots back before Exmoor.
The Western Amateur historically features one of the top fields in amateur golf and the 2012 edition will not be an exception. Six of the world’s top 10 amateurs will be in the field at Exmoor, including Alabama junior Bobby Wyatt, the top ranked player in the nation. Other featured performers include Stanford sophomore Patrick Rodgers, Washington senior Chris Williams and Austrailian Matt Stieger. 34 states and 11 countries will be represented in the field of 156 players.
The golf tournament consists of a grueling mix of stroke and match play. The first three days of the event will include 72 holes of stroke play, including 36 holes on Thursday. The match play component of the Western Amateur will take place the final two days. The winner will be crowned on Saturday and will join Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Curtis Strange, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods as past champions. Ethan Tracy upset Patrick Cantlay 1-up in a match that came down to the final two putts on the 18th hole to win the 2011 Western Amateur.
Admission to the 2012 Western Amateur is free.
