Luke Donald Becomes Third Chicago Golfer to Win in 2011
The state of Illinois golf has reached new heights as Luke Donald continued Chicago golf’s domination of the 2011 PGA Tour with his win at the Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, AZ. Donald defeated the top ranked player in the world, Martin Kaymer, to grab his first US victory since the 2006 Honda Classic.
“I have not won in America for five years. It has been a lot of sweat and tears to get this to this point. It feels great. Hats off to Martin for reaching world No 1. That’s quite an accomplishment, and makes this win a lot sweeter,” Donald said.
Donald, who played college golf at Northwestern University, joins Mark Wilson and D.A. Points as Chicago golfers who have won on the PGA Tour this year. Through the first eight weeks on Tour in 2011, golfers with Chicago connections have won four times. Therefore, look for Kevin Streelman to join the winners circle shortly.
