One of the most popular players on the Champions Tour has joined forces with a local golf powerhouse. World Golf Hall of Famer Fred Couples will be playing putters this year exclusively from Tinley Park-based Bettinardi Golf on the PGA Champions Tour and in other events around the world.
Couples has been using the Fred Couples Blade Bettinardi model for the past four years. He’s won five times on the Champions Tour during that time. Despite facing a 30-year age gap to some of his fellow competitors, the 58 year-old Couples finished T18 last year at Augusta and has finished in the top 20 at three of the last four Masters he played in.
Couples has won more than 60 professional tournaments – including 15 PGA Tour titles, 13 on the Champions Tour and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013 while winning more than $30 million in prize money during a professional career that began in 1980.
A former world number one, he won the Masters in 1992 and The Players Championship in 1984 and 1996. He has also represented the USA in five Ryder Cup contests and captained the United States to victory in the Presidents Cup three times.
“I’m really looking forward to representing Bettinardi and its beautiful range of hand-made putters, as they always give me great confidence when I’m standing over putts,” said Couples. “Having won 5 times already with a Bettinardi putter, there’s nothing I’d rather be putting with.”
Bettinardi Golf manufactures all of their hand-crafted putters in south suburban Tinley Park from a single piece of high quality steel using hi-tech CNC milling technology. Since 1998, they’ve had over 50 professional wins on all worldwide tours, including 25 wins in the PGA Tour.
“Having Fred Couples join our Tour staff is a massive endorsement for Bettinardi Golf,” said founder Robert Bettinardi. “We’re so proud and excited to welcome him to our growing Tour staff. I’m sure he will prove to be a great ambassador for our brand, as he attracts huge crowds and media attention wherever he plays.”
In addition to Couples, other professionals who have played Bettinardi putters include Matt Kuchar, Brian Gay, Stephen Bowditch, Jim Herman, Lexi Thompson and Keegan Bradley. Many of these players receive a custom fitting at the Bettinardi facility in Tinley Park that is home to 90 employees.
Bettinardi’s history can be traced back to 1992 when founder Bob Bettinardi used a CNC milling machine to craft a putter out of a singular block of steel. This technique was unique to the golf business at the time, when putter heads were typically made in multiple pieces where the hosel (neck) was welded to the body.
The Bettinardi Golf brand was officially born in 1999, and the company started providing Bettinardi putters to some PGA Tour players. It was at the 1999 Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic where Jesper Parnevik used a Bettinardi putter to set a tournament scoring record that featured just 99 putts over four rounds.
Bettinardi has since expanded their product offerings to include wedges. Bettinardi products are now available at Studio B, which is Bettinardi Golf’s high-tech putter fitting facility and customization shop that is conveniently located above the factory floor and is open to the public.
While getting fit at Studio B, golfers can test 30+ unique head styles with different finishes, face millings, and sight alignments. To schedule an appointment at Bettinardi’s Studio B, which is located at 7800 Graphics Drive in Tinley Park, call (708) 802-7400.
