A year before it hosts the PGA Tour and the 2013 BMW Championship, Lake Forest Golf Course Conway Farms will be on display to the golf world as it hosts the 2012 US Mid-Amateur golf tournament. This prestigious national event takes place September 8-13 and includes amateur golfers 25 years and older.
The format for the US Mid-Amateur includes 18 holes of stroke play on September 8-9 at Conway Farms and Knollwood Club, which is also located in Lake Forest. The low 64 golfers after 36 holes will advance to match play at Conway Farms which will take place September 10-13. The finals of the 2012 US Mid-Amateur will consist of 36 holes of match play on Thursday, September 13. The winner of the Mid-Am wins an automatic invitation to the 2013 Masters in Augusta, Georgia.
Last year, Randal Lewis of Alma, Michigan defeated Kenny Cook of Noblesville, Indiana 3 and 2 to win the 2011 US Mid-Amateur Championship. Previous winners of the event include Jay Sigel, a three-time winner and a two-time U.S. Amateur champion, Nathan Smith and Trip Kuehne.
The US Mid-Amateur was first played in 1981 at Bellerive Country Club in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Sharing similar rules as the the US Amateur Championship, qualifiers for the Mid-Amateur must also be at least 25 years old as of the opening day of the tournament and have a USGA handicap index of 3.4 or lower. The USGA received 3,634 entries for the 2012 US Mid-Amateur, but only the final 264 competitors will be at Conway Farms to compete for the title.
Admission to the 2012 US Mid-Amateur is free. Tickets are not required for any of the days between September 8-13.
