Lake Forest resident and former USGA President Buzz Taylor passed away recently at the age of 79. Taylor was a steward of the game who fought to protect its integrity for his entire career.
In 1998, F. Morgan “Buzz” Taylor Jr., then president of the U.S. Golf Association, made a defiant comment that rocked the golf world.
Concerned that new ball and club technology was changing the game, he unleashed a storm of controversy when he discussed the possibility of banning titanium clubs and declared: “No lawyer is going to stop us.”
The notable battle between the USGA and angry equipment companies ended with a USGA decision to develop a protocol only for future clubs. The showdown was symbolic of Mr. Taylor’s fierce commitment to golf.
“He was a man of the highest integrity and felt the standards of golf needed to be upheld,” said his son, John. “He couldn’t care less what the equipment manufacturers or anyone else thought.”
