The wait is finally over for Cantigny golf fans as the Woodside nine reconstruction is complete. The Wheaton golf course’s third nine re-opened on May 25 to critical acclaim and overall relief from fans of the course.
Cantigny benefitted greatly from the uncommonly mild winter and spring weather. The mild conditions in Wheaton allowed construction to progress rapidly and beyond expectations.
Cantigny Golf closed the Woodside nine last October to fix erosion issues along a stream that runs through the course. Course officials, along with Libertyville-based Jacobson Golf Course Design, also entirely rebuilt the second hole, which is a challenging 555-yard par 5. Both projects have been successfully finished and the surrounding shoreline has been stabilized and re-planted.
Rebuilding the second hole should improve the players’ visibility and enjoyment of the hole. Hazards that were somewhat hidden previously are now easily seen and should provide a terrific shotmaking test for golfers of all skill levels. The structural improvements to the course also include an all-new pump house that features a built-in shelter that will protect golfers during inclement weather.
“This project, in multiple ways, was consistent with Cantigny Golf’s status as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” said Cantigy Golf course superintendent Scott Witte said. “Water quality has long been a top priority for us, and so is providing wildlife habitat. The birds and animals might like the new Woodside No. 2 just as much as the golfers!”
