The Chicago area will have another local representative on the PGA Tour next season as Elgin-native Carlos Sainz, Jr. recently earned playing privileges for the PGA TOUR’s 2015 season by finishing among the top 50 in the Web.com Tour finals. The 28-year-old Sainz qualified for the PGA Tour with a strong finish in the Web.com Tour’s four season-ending playoff events including a 19th at the Hotel Fitness Championship, T-12 at the Chiquita Classic and tie for 31st at the Web.com Tour Championship.
The winner of 2013 Chicago Open at Cantigny Golf club in Wheaton, Sainz struggled in his first year on the Web.com Tour, missing 12 of the first 17 tournament cuts and finding himself on the outside looking in. He rebounded, however, in the final stages of the season to finish in the 49th spot of the 50 PGA Tour cards awarded.
“It’s been a dream come true,” said Sainz on the Web.com Tour’s website. “It’s kind of surreal now, but I’m sure it will settle in the next couple of days, but it’s definitely a dream come true and I’m really happy that it’s my time.”
“You know, I was always kind of the bubble boy since Portland, so it’s kind of a little mini-Cinderella story, at least for me,” he said. “And you know I had doubt but was able to overcome it and kind of believe in myself every week and the dream came true.”
Sainz, Jr. is currently scheduled to defend his title at The 2014 Chicago Open at Cantigny in Wheaton, October 5-7. The 2014-15 PGA Tour season also begins the week of October 6 at Napa, California, with the Frys.com Open.
