Chicago golf can celebrate once again as one of our own has won on the PGA Tour. Congratulations to Elmhurst resident Mark Wilson, who posted a final round of 3-under-par 67 and to win the Sony Open by two strokes over Tim Clark and Steve Marino. The victory is Mark Wilson’s third career title on the PGA Tour and the championship earned him invitations to the Masters and the PGA Championship.
With 36 holes to play on Sunday due to a first round rain out, Wilson took the lead for the first time when he converted a two-foot birdie on his last hole on his morning round. He had about a two minute break until his final round started and birdies at the 4th and 9th rounds allowed him to make the turn with a four-stroke lead. The lead shrank to a single stroke after a Tim Clark birdied his final hole, but Wilson held on to win by two-strokes when he birdied the 18th hole.
This will be Mark Wilson’s first invite to Augusta, and it will be the 75th edition of the Masters Tournament. Last year, Wilson watched the final round of the Masters in the hospital while waiting for his wife to give birth to the couple’s second child.
