Founded in 1899, Flossmoor Golf Club is a private facility that offers an 18-hole golf course. The course was designed by Herbert Tweedie and opened in 1900.<\/p>\n

It first gained national attention in 1906 when it hosted the Western Open<\/a>, considered on par with the U.S. Open at the time. Alex Smith won that event, securing one of his two Western Open titles.<\/p>\n

In 1909, the\u00a0Western Golf Association<\/a>\u00a0returned to Flossmoor for the Western Amateur, where\u00a0Chick Evans<\/a>\u00a0claimed his first of eight titles in the event. In 1911, then-club president Harry Collis took charge of the course\u2019s maintenance, becoming an accomplished agronomist and developing the renowned Flossmoor Bent Grass, still popular on putting greens today. Collis\u2019 contributions were honored with his induction into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 2023.<\/p>\n

During World War I,\u00a0Flossmoor Golf Club<\/a>\u00a0hosted Red Cross Matches in 1917 and 1918, featuring stars like Robert Garner, Chick Evans, Perry Adair, and Bobby Jones. The club continued to attract prestigious events, including the third annual PGA Championship in 1920, won by Illinois native Jock Hutchison.
