Founded in 1916 and originally named Lakewoods before soon adopting the name Shoreacres, the course reflects the timeless vision of architect Seth Raynor and is regarded as one of his most authentic early solo designs Shoreacres. The estate’s entrance past the clubhouse, designed by David Adler and perched on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, evokes a nostalgic, storied atmosphere—possibly canal the ambiance of a bygone era.

The course’s design gleams with strategic genius and architectural depth. Raynor weaves classic templates—like the Road Hole, Biarritz, Eden, Redan, and Leven—through gently rolling terrain, ravines, and woodland topography, resulting in a rich and varied routing that challenges and delights in equal measure. Particularly impressive is the stretch from the 10th to 15th holes—a crescendo of drama featuring bold carries, steep approaches, and visually striking spatial artistry, with the par 5 15th hole requiring a daring tee shot over a ravine. Throughout, the course rewards accuracy, creative thought, and shot making over brute distance.

Maintained with care and reverence for its legacy, Shoreacres remains close to its original design. In the early 2000s, Tom Doak’s Renaissance Design collaborated with longtime course steward Brian Palmer to restore the course’s greens and fairways, respectfully enlarging features and managing tree growth to bring Raynor’s original intent back to life.

The result is a museum-quality golf experience—both historically reverent and vividly playable. Players walk every round, often with a caddie, as carts are not allowed, ensuring engagement with the land as Raynor envisioned.

[1680

1692,1764
post-20084","listing","type-listing","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","listing-category-private","location-illinois","location-lake-bluff
["GET
