According to a recent Daily Herald report, Wheaton Park District officials continue to debate the idea of bringing a proposed hotel to Arrowhead Golf Club. Located at 26W151 Butterfield Road in Wheaton, Arrowhead features a 27-hole golf course and boasts one of the top clubhouses in the Chicago area.
According to park district officials, three developers are looking to obtain a lease, including Kansas City-based Fairway Suites LLC, who has proposed building a 120-room, nationally branded hotel on golf course property. Fairway Suites indicates on their website that their hotels can help attract 35,000-45,000 guests annually, thereby increasing golf rounds, food and beverage sales, pro-shop sales and meeting room rentals.
The Wheaton Park District hired a Memphis-based consulting firm to prepare a feasibility report based on current and projected traffic. The report indicated that the proposed hotel could generate strong weekend business driven by the more than 90 weddings held annually at the clubhouse and other social events, but most likely just marginal weekday business.
If the Park District board decides to pursue a lease and chooses a developer, the agreement would clarify maintenance and hotel operation standards to help protect the interests of the park district and the 27-hole golf course. More information should be available when the Park District board meets again on November 14.
Originally opened in 1926 as the private 18-hole Antlers Country Club, the club was renamed Arrowhead Golf Club in 1929 for the many Native American artifacts that were found on the site during construction. In 1967 Arrowhead’s West course was constructed bringing the number of holes to the current total of 27.
