Glencoe Golf Club

Glencoe Golf Club holds a rich history as one of the first public golf courses on Chicago’s North Shore, with a legacy stretching back to its founding in 1921. Established by Glencoe residents seeking an alternative to private country club memberships, the club was developed through a unique intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Glencoe and the Forest Preserves of Cook County. The original 18-hole layout was designed by George O’Neil, a nationally recognized golf course architect, and the course has since been a staple of the community. Its accessible nature and beautiful setting along the Skokie River have long made it a popular destination for golfers of all skill levels, drawing over 40,000 rounds of golf annually.

Beyond its historical significance, the Glencoe Golf Club is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, highlighting its deep commitment to environmental stewardship. The 126-acre property is more than just a golf course; it is a thriving ecosystem, featuring naturalized areas, pollinator gardens, and habitats for a diverse array of wildlife, from monarch butterflies to great blue herons. The club’s green initiatives include water conservation efforts, the use of eco-friendly equipment, and community-focused environmental programs like bird walks, which reinforce its role as a preserved natural space for both recreation and education. The club is currently in the midst of a transformative project with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art clubhouse. This modern facility, which is replacing the more than 100-year-old original structure, is designed in the Prairie School of architecture, blending horizontal lines and natural materials to harmonize with the local landscape. Set to open in the summer of 2026, the new clubhouse will serve as a year-round community hub, featuring a full-service restaurant and bar, multi-sport simulators, and dedicated event spaces. This ambitious redevelopment, approved by a community referendum, marks a new chapter for the Glencoe Golf Club, enhancing its offerings while preserving its identity as a treasured public asset on the North Shore.
