Harborside International Golf Center is a 36-hole public golf facility located in Chicago, Illinois. Located about 15 minutes south of downtown Chicago, Harborside International Golf Center features two golf courses and a rugged, links-style layout, as well as one of the top practice facilities in Chicagoland.
Harborside Golf is accessible right off the highway and features two spectacular golf courses. The Starboard course is ranked 25th nationally as the best municipal golf course in the country, and Port course is not far behind, just outside the top 50. Both are very unique links style courses with 27-holes where you pretty much a view of the skyline the entire time you’re there, and then 9 holes on Starboard where you’re surrounded by Lake Calumet.
The Port Course, which plays at 6,589 yards from the championship tees, hosted the SBC Senior Open, a PGA Champions TOUR event in 2002 in which Bob Gilder defeated Hale Irwin in a playoff.
Harborside Golf – Port 15th
The 15th hole on the Harborside International Golf Center Port Course features Chicago’s Most Troublesome Bunker. A kidney-shaped green is guarded by a huge bunker with a grassy anchor aesthetically placed in the middle. Your chances for par will sink like an anchor should you place your tee shot in this bunker.
The Starboard Course, which is slightly longer at 6,600 yards from the championship tees, offers one of the most challenging forced carries in Chicago. The 17th hole on the Starboard Course at Harborside International is a par 3 that plays to a length of 174 yards with a forced carry over Lake Calumet.
A major factor when playing this signature hole is the wind direction, which can often stretch a mid iron into a long iron if the wind is into the face of the golfer. The green is protected by three deep bunkers on the left, limiting any hope of a bailout option, while adding a significant amount of drama in the Windy City.
The practice facility at Harborside Golf was recognized as a Top 50 Public Range as part of the 2020 Golf Range Association of America (GRAA) Awards. Criteria for the top 50 looks at each facility’s amenities and services, technology integration, clinics and workshops, revenue and more.
