The annual Illinois State Amateur Championship is administered by the Chicago District Golf Association. This year marks the 94th edition of the event and Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora will be the host site.
The field consists of 136 contestants, of which there are 42 exempt players and 94 who qualified. The event is now a 72-hole stroke play competition contested over three days and is widely considered the premier amateur golf event in the state.
Since the Championship was first conducted at stroke play, 46 different golfers have hoisted the Louis L. Emmerson trophy, several of which are current or former members of the PGA Tour, including Jim Jamieson, Robert Zender, Gary Hallberg, David Ogrin, Mark Hensby, D.A. Points, Nick Hardy, and Luke Guthrie. In addition to having his name engraved on the Emmerson trophy, the champion of the Illinois State Amateur will receive an automatic exemption into this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship, slated for The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., Aug. 11-17.
On Tuesday, July 15, the entire field will play 18 holes of stroke play. Wednesday, July 16, the entire field will play 18 holes of stroke play, with a cut to the low 35 and ties occurring after Round 2 is complete. The final day’s competition, Thursday, July 17, will have the low 35 and ties playing 36 holes of stroke play to determine a champion.
Spectator admission and parking are free.
