Following the Bears’ loss to the Packers on Sunday, the mood of sports fans in Lake Forest quickly changed from “bummer” to “stunner” with the ignition of the 2015 BMW Championship featured in their home town. The good news started at the beginning of the week with the announcement that the BMW Championship will return again to Conway Farms in 2017 (2019 at Medinah CC).
The excitement continued to build during the practice rounds as this third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs would be the first to enjoin the “new Big 4” in competition — Rory, Jason, Jordan, and Rickie. The weather was terrific for the mid-week display of golf and comedy starring former near-by resident, Bill Murray, who is now enshrined in the Caddie Hall of Fame.
The 2014 BMW Championship was contested at Cherry Hill Country Club in Colorado where Billy Horschel defeated Bubba Watson by two strokes. Horschel also won the next event, the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta to claim the ultimate season-long prize, the FedEx Cup.
The last time the BMW Championship was played at Conway Farms was in 2013 when Zach Johnson won the tournament and Jim Furyk made history. Furyk shot an incredible 12-under-par 59 in the second round, becoming just the sixth player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event.
The BMW Championship is managed by the Western Golf Association, which is based in north-suburban Golf, and is one of the United States’ oldest golf organizations. In addition to the BMW Championship, The Western Golf Association has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship Program since its inception in 1930. There are currently 840 Evans Scholars attending top universities in the United States, with a significant portion of the proceeds for these scholarships being generated by the BMW Championship.
