Spring Fling with FlingGolf

For golfers who, outside of golf, consider themselves to be athletic, ambitious, and adventurous, and have arrived into a situation where they feel that pickleball is not very athletic, and the novelty of axe throwing has worn off, and the rush of escape rooms was a one-timer, there is a golf related offshoot hoping to become the ‘next big thing’. Enter the sport activity of FlingGolf.

FlingGolf is a variation of real golf where instead of hitting a golf ball with a club, you use a single FlingStick® thrower to hurl the ball and shape every shot from tee to hole. Yes, the unique design of the thrower (club) enables the fling golfer to use just one ‘club’ for all shots throughout the teeing area, the general area, and even for putts on the green.

FlingGolf is so seamless and akin to traditional golf that it can even be played in the same foursome.

The FlingStick’s appearance and components closely resemble a real golf club. The three parts of a FlingStick® are the grip, shaft, and head. The head is a cupped channel that holds the ball. On the side of the head is the striker pad, used for putting.

Place a regulation golf ball in the channel of the FlingStick® and fling the ball on all shots — long distance FlingShots from the tee box, approach shots from the fairway or rough, and touch (chip) shots closer to the green.

There are a number of different methods to fling or launch the ball, but FlingGolf experts advise to always let loose and completely follow through; the FlingGolf mantra is “Aim High & Let It Fly!”. Among the various FlingGolf launching techniques explained in their videos are: the overhand, the sidearm, the low-to-high, the flop shot, and the bump and run.

A round of FlingGolf will tend to play quicker than a round of traditional golf, owing to the use of just one “club”; there is more accuracy, there are no practice swings, and a uniform penalty for shots ending up outside the general area of the course saves time.

FlingGolf Quick Rules:
On the teeing area:
Take as many steps as you like while hurling the ball toward the hole just make sure to launch before you reach the tee marker.

In the Fairway and Rough:
Note and mark where your ball lies. Retreat up to 5 paces away from the hole and take your shot before reaching your previous lie.

In a Sand Bunker, Penalty Area, or Out-of-Bounds:
Take a 1-stroke penalty and play the next shot from a spot within two (2) FlingStick’s lengths no closer to the hole from
a) the point of entry into the sand
b) the point of entry into the penalty area
c) where the ball went out-of-bounds or was last seen

On the Green:
Use the striker pad on the FlingStick® head and putt the ball toward the hole.

Count the number of shots from tee to hole, like counting strokes in regular golf.

While most courses in the Chicago area will allow golfers to play FlingGolf, provided that they already have their own FlingStick®, there is one public golf course in our area that has FlingSticks to ‘rent’. Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton has a limited supply of FlingSticks in all sizes and the rental fee is zero!
