PXG Secret Weapon Mini Driver Gets More Speed and Forgiveness

Finding the right club for a demanding tee shot often means balancing distance with control. PXG’s updated Secret Weapon Mini Driver is designed to give golfers another option, combining a compact clubhead with technology intended to deliver more speed and forgiveness from both the tee and fairway.

The latest Secret Weapon features a 300cc head, 13 degrees of loft and a standard length of 43.25 inches. PXG says the new model builds on the original with a thinner face, a redesigned internal sole structure and adjustable weighting that allows golfers to fine-tune performance.

For Chicago golfers considering a different approach to the top end of their bags, the key question is where a mini driver fits: as an alternative tee club, a fairway option or a potential replacement for an existing wood.

Building on CGR’s Experience With PXG Drivers

Chicago Golf Report previously covered the PXG GEN5 0311 and 0311 XF drivers, including a fitting at PXG’s Oak Brook location. That review also discussed our experience playing the PXG 0211 driver before moving into the GEN5 lineup.

The fitting highlighted how much the combination of clubhead, shaft and settings can influence results. Testing the GEN5 models led to the selection of a 10.5-degree 0311 XF paired with a Fujikura Motore X F3 shaft.

The new Secret Weapon brings that same fitting consideration to a different club category. Its appeal will depend on how its distance, dispersion and versatility compare with the driver and fairway woods already in a golfer’s bag.

A Thinner Face Designed for More Speed

According to PXG, the updated Secret Weapon’s face is more than four percent thinner than the previous generation. The company says this allows greater deflection at impact, helping generate faster ball speeds across a larger portion of the hitting surface.

To support the thinner face, PXG engineers used finite element analysis to refine the internal sole structure and distribute impact stress throughout the head.

Weight saved from the face was repositioned around the perimeter to increase moment of inertia, or resistance to twisting. The intended benefit is better preservation of distance and directional control when contact moves away from the center.

A lightweight carbon fiber crown also allows more weight to be positioned low and deep in the clubhead. PXG says the design draws on technologies featured in its Lightning lineup.

Four Weight Locations Offer Fitting Flexibility

The Secret Weapon includes four adjustable sole-weight locations: heel, toe, front and back.

The standard configuration includes two 7.5-gram weights and two 2.5-gram weights. Moving those weights provides options for adjusting shot shape, spin and swing weight, while an adjustable hosel offers additional control over launch and trajectory.

That flexibility gives golfers and fitters several variables to evaluate. Rather than judging the club solely by its longest shot, a fitting can help establish whether a particular configuration produces a useful, repeatable ball flight.

Jake Knapp Makes the Switch

PGA TOUR professional Jake Knapp, who played the original Secret Weapon, has put the updated model in his bag.

“The original Secret Weapon was my favorite club in the bag, so I had high expectations for this one,” said Knapp. “I absolutely love it. It has everything I liked about the original, with more speed and forgiveness. Putting it in the bag was an easy decision.”

His endorsement offers a tour player’s perspective, although recreational golfers will need to evaluate the club against their own swing and equipment.
