Whether you’re using a blade, peripheral weighted or mallet putter, or whether you’re using a center-shafted, heel-shafter or hosel offset putter, the grip is the only point of contact between you and your putter. That’s why its essential to identify the right grip for you, helping to produce the best, most consistent putting stroke possible.
Putter grips are different from all other clubs in your bag because the putter is the only grip that is allowed have a flat edge. Utilizing that flat edge, along with the thickness and grip material can help identify proper thumb placement.
A putting stroke devoid of impact from the hands or wrists is a goal for many golfers. In theory, this allows the stroke to be controlled by the bigger muscles of the shoulders and core.
To that end, I recently tested the Garsen MAX grip, which is an oversized, square grip with a 45% rotation. The goal of a thicker, oversized grip is to relieve arm and shoulder tension, inhibiting wrist action, allowing the big muscles to produce a more consistent putting stroke.
With 45% rotation, the Garsen MAX places your hands in a position so the palms face each other and the wrists are in a neutral position. The grip turns your elbows into your body and sets your shoulders back.
With the “front” of the grip now an angled area, it’s certainly a unique feeling that takes a few strokes to become accustomed to. However, it’s easy to see how the Garsen MAX works by promoting shoulder rotation and providing a one-piece feel and a more consistent stroke.
With my hands at a 45 degree angle and my palms underneath, I definitely felt like my shoulders and torso were much more involved in my putting stroke. The other significant differentiator was the grip’s ability to neutralize my dominant right hand due to the palm-to-palm set up.
Although it took some time, I can’t imagine going back to a traditional grip where my wrists are less neutral. The innovative design behind the Garsen MAX is a simple, yet highly effective way to immediately improve your putting.
In addition to the MAX, Garsen also offers the Ultimate grip and the Quad Tour grip. The versatile Garsen Ultimate grip offers three flat sides which helps the palms face each other and sets the wrists in a neutral position.
This versatile design also allows you to place your hands into many other positions to create your desired grip. The Garsen Ultimate works extremely well with the popular claw grip, which effectively neutralizes the right hand by taking it almost completely off the club.
With a flat topline and bottom, the Garsen Quad Tour line also works great for claw, and saw style putting grips. It features a unique parallelogram design that provides the benefits of the Garsen MAX but places your hands in a more traditional position.
The Garsen Quad Tour comes in a tapered or non-tapered design. Like the MAX, the shape of this grip helps promote shoulder rotation by turning your elbows into your body and setting your shoulders back.
All three Garsen grip designs provide innovations that encourage more biomechanically efficient positions within the putting stroke. Try one on for size you’ll quickly appreciate improved feel and a more consistent putting stroke.
