A new Topgolf facility is set to be the centerpiece of a planned 100-acre entertainment district in Tinley Park. Located near the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre, the Tinley Park Village Board recently approved a special use for the planned unit development, southeast of the interchange of Interstate 80 and Harlem Avenue.
The outdoor, multilevel golf driving range will feature 102 sheltered bays and will be part of a broader development vision for the site, which is currently owned by the developers of Odyssey Fun World.
The Tinley Park facility will be the third Chicagoland Topgolf, joining Naperville and Schaumburg. Topgolf opened in Wood Dale in 2010, but was closed about a decade later after the Topgolf Schaumburg facility opened. The Wood Dale site is now home to 390 Golf Experience.
The Topgolf location in Tinley Park will be situated near Oak Park Avenue and Harlem Avenue, directly west of a CarMax dealership and east of Brookside Marketplace at the intersection of Harlem and 191st Street. This development is expected to transform the area into a vibrant entertainment hub.
The Topgolf driving range will feature bays across three levels, along with a restaurant, bar, and meeting spaces. It is designed to operate year-round, with heating elements ensuring that the driving range maintains a comfortable temperature of around 60 degrees even during Tinley Park’s cold winters.
Topgolf is expected to serve as a catalyst for further entertainment-related developments in the area. The zoning codes for the site have been tailored to exclude businesses such as banks, medical offices, currency exchanges, and funeral homes, keeping the focus on entertainment.
Although some parts of the 100-acre site face challenges due to floodplain issues, the 13 acres where Topgolf is planned are unaffected. The site, currently mostly fallow farmland, will see Topgolf situated along Prosperi Drive, extending south to 191st Street. Some of the land was previously used for Odyssey Fun Farm attractions.
The Topgolf facility will feature a three-story structure with more than 22,000 square feet of space and a height of 52 feet. It will also include parking for 476 vehicles and tall nets up to 170 feet high to contain golf shots within the driving range.
Anthony DeAngelis, the petitioner for the site, expressed excitement about the project, stating that Topgolf is the perfect anchor to restart development in the area, originally envisioned as “I-80 World” when the property was annexed to Tinley Park in 1996.
The new Topgolf will be within a driver of Odyssey Golf Foundation, which is a public, 18-hole golf course that was designed by Harry Bower and two-time U.S. Open winner Curtis Strange. The course has been receiving solid reviews for golf course conditioning.
The 16th hole at Odyssey Country Club was named one of Chicago’s top forced carry golf shots. Architect Curtis Strange placed plenty of water hazards on his first fifteen holes at Odyssey, but also designed ways for the very skillful or very cunning golfers to avoid these wet trappings.
Topgolf Tinley Park’s proposed operating hours are planned from 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Topgolf Naperville is open from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Topgolf Naperville site has seen a number of firearm-related arrests this year, with no similar incidents reported at the Schaumburg location. Topgolf is headquartered in Dallas and is a unit of Topgolf Callaway Brands Corp., with over 100 locations worldwide, including more than 80 in the U.S. and sites in countries such as Australia, Germany, Mexico, and Spain.
