The changes keep coming at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, which has been one of the busiest golf facilities in the Chicagoland area. After recently hosting the Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open and unveiling their new Performance Center, club owner Jim McWethy has announced that national award winning golf instructor Dr. Jim Suttie has joined the teaching staff at Mistwood Golf Club.
The 2000 PGA National Teacher of the Year and one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America, Dr. Suttie was lured away from Cog Hill Golf & Country Club by McWethy and the new state-of-the-art Mistwood Performance Center. “That was the overriding factor,’’ said Dr. Suttie. “I’ve always wanted to have a place like this. I couldn’t pass it up. They’ve got serious technology here (at Mistwood). The people who see me are real serious. They will come from everywhere. It doesn’t matter where I go, they will find me.”
Suttie has worked with many top PGA players including PGA champion and Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger and local Chicago players Kevin Streelman, Mark Wilson and Chip Beck. Prior to teaching full-time, Dr. Suttie was a successful college coach, directing teams at Northwestern, Florida Gulf Coast and Eastern Kentucky.
A 1970 Northern Illinois University graduate, Dr. Suttie earned his doctorate degree in biomechanics from Middle Tennessee University. As part of his studies, he wrote his thesis on “A Biomechanical Comparison between Conventional Golf Swing Technique and a Unique Kinesthetic Feed Back Technique.”
“We’re delighted to have an instructor with the experience and national recognition that Dr. Suttie brings,’’ said Jim McWethy. “It fits our goal of having absolutely top quality in every aspect of our operation at Mistwood.”
The new Mistwood Performance Center opened earlier this summer as part of a multi-million dollar renovation project to the facility, which also included major course renovations to the golf course. The facility includes 11 year-round climate controlled hitting stations, two indoor/outdoor heated teaching bays for year round lessons and 32 outdoor stations. The Performance Center also includes a custom club-fitting room, putting room, and a repair and club-building center.
